The best interview in the world....ever
This is an interview which was on "Later with Jools Holland" where by the power of TV Jools interveiwed himself
Jools 1: Hi
Jools 2: I'm going to treat you like any other artist and just ask you the sort of questions I'd normally ask. Your 'Best Of..' album is out at the moment and you are touring around Britian with your Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at the moment, but what was the thing that first influenced you and made you really want to get into it and take up music?
Jools 1: Well I suppose, uh, we haven't got all day but I suppose my Uncle David used to play boogie woogie on the piano. He was in a Rhythm and Blues group and I heard that and it got me going so then I listened to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and generally have a boogie woogie experiment every night.
Jools 2: Of course you were playing with Dr John early on (on Later) that was. What's he like? Is he a great guy to work with?
Jools 1: (starts yabbbering on) The night tripper. I'm pleased you brought that up because he is possibilty one of my most favorite people. He plays the piano beautifully and sings great and he makes everything his own. He's got a great feel, thats the thing you want from music you've got to have a technique but you don't want technique to get in the way of feel.
Jools 2: (Looks impatient) Now of course we have some footage of you. We always have footage of people early on in their careers when we come and interveiw them.
Jools 1: You don't have to show it
Jools 2: I am very pleased to say we have some lovely footage of you and squeeze and I also think Gilson the drummer there (points to Gilson) um uh together.
Jools 1: Pleased to hear it
Jools 2: Your first apparance on top of the pops in 1978
FOOTAGE IS SHOWN.... Jools has a huge cigar coming from his mouth, a leapord skin hat, shades and a white waist coat with piano keys on it. He is bobbing around like an energetic monkey while playing the keyboard. The guitarist has big hair, a bare chest, braces and nipple piercings (yikes) and he keeps jerking around as though someone has connected him to the national grid (that might explain the hair)
Jools 1: (looks embarased)
Jools 2: There you are, that wasn't too embarrasing was it?
Jools 1: Well, yeah
Jools 2: Was it all Sex, Jazz and Rock 'n' Roll in those days for you?
Jools 1: All the way, Yeah!
Jools 2: And, uh, how did you get from being in Squeeze like that to having this huge Rhythm and Blues fabulous, beautiful Rhythm and Blues orchestra?
Jools 1: They are a lovely orchestra. Well they are from, I suppose it started with just me and Gilson, the drummer, and it was called The Big Band and, uh, Gilson would come and I'd say here's The Big Band and it would just be him you see and slowly all the other people joined us, its marvellous. The whole thing has grown into this lovely one big happy marvellous family the thrusting Rhythm and Blues Orchestra
Jools 2: Thankyou very much! Now finally you've played a couple of things from your 'Best Of..' record, now what are you going to be playing for us, uh, tonight in a moment
Jools 1: Well, uh, it's a song, uh Jools, if I may call you that, that we have been doing for a bit now, called "Friends not Lovers" and, uh, I was gonna try and send it to Ray Charles I think it's the sort of thing that might suit him and it might suit you actually Jools.
Jools 2: I see
Jools 1: Thankyou very much. Jools Holland!
Jools 2: Thanks Jools
